MAKE MUSIC NOT WAR. fullstop.

FIRST POST OF 2015...and what great way to start it.

MAKE MUSIC NOT WAR...just those simple words blew me away. Most of us are aware of the phase, Make Love not War, and have often skipped passed them because we usually associated them with valentine's-day-related-jargon and puppies in a basket (...or maybe its just me). But when i run into the phrase MAKE MUSIC NOT WAR, an obvious offshoot of afore-mentioned infamous phase, it totally blindsided me.

It struck a nerve because it took one thing am passionate about, music, and correlated it with an atrocity. An atrocity i have never had to endure but an atrocity nonetheless. I caught an excerpt of a programme on that topic on #CCTVnews and that captured my full attention, at least for the moment, and after i did what every half-internet savvy layman would do, GOOGLE IT. And like every layman i went to images first, this is how us laymen check whether a story is worth our time:). I run into the usual word-play designs and then i started coming across some more realistic images that had me scrolling on and on. Wow, how intriguing, i thought, but more than that it got me thinking...imagine that, a world where music could make a difference against an atrocity of such magnitude.

The reason i never connected with MAKE LOVE NOT WAR was because it seemed a far fetched idea. MAKE MUSIC NOT WAR seems a more achievable take on the matter on to a bigger goal of Love. But thats just my take on it, am guilty of being a Music Lover, Music that affects peoples lives and that phrase and campaign is in the grandest order of that belief. Its not so much about soldiers grabbing guitars, hugging and singing Kumbayah, as much as it is about using the art to in whichever way you can to bring about awareness about it and have an impact on thinking and perspectives rather than just pipe-dreams and wishes...again, just a music lover admiring what another music lover did to achieve this.

...here is a short piece on the campaign;
"...Pedro Reyes’s Disarm project is the second generation of instruments made using the remnants of weapons that the Mexican army collected and destroyed. The Mexican artist collaborated with a team of musicians and Cocolab, a media studio in Mexico City to create eight instruments that form an orchestra.Reyes’s aim is to create awareness around visible and invisible violence around the world. The music made by the destroyed weapons aim to free the lives of those they took and express peace to all who are and were affected by violence..."
Mind blown when i read it, mind blown when i saw it, still mind blown now.
